How do I make a product photo square?
Pad it or crop it. Padding adds bands of white, a colour, transparency or a blurred copy of the photo to the short side, so no part of the product is cut off. Cropping cuts the long side, so the photo fills the square but its edges go. The photo is never enlarged.

Pad when the whole product must show, as on a main image: the product keeps its size and the frame grows around it. Crop when the photo has room around the product, as in a lifestyle shot, and should fill the frame. Crop's Position chooses which part stays.

In the seller help we read, eBay, TikTok Shop and Instagram recommend square (1:1) images and Zalando requires 1:1.44. The other 12 state no ratio. The table above lists what each one's seller help says, with a link to its full image rules.
No pixel is enlarged. A JPG stays JPG, a PNG stays PNG and a WebP stays WebP; a JPG on a transparent background is saved as PNG, because JPG has no transparency. No EXIF or GPS data goes along. Photos larger than 10,000 px on a side after squaring are scaled down to that.
