What size should Shopify product images be?

ProduktShot Team4 min

Short answer

For square product images, Shopify says 2048 x 2048 pixels usually displays best. Its admin takes images up to 5000 x 5000 pixels (25 megapixels) and under 20 MB, and PNG is its first choice of format, then JPEG. Use one aspect ratio for every product's main image so collection pages line up.

What is the best image size for Shopify products?

2048 x 2048 pixels for a square image, according to Shopify's help. Larger files are accepted, up to the limits below.

SpecValue
Recommended (square)2048 × 2048 px
Maximum size (admin)5000 × 5000 px, or 25 megapixels
Maximum size (developer API)4472 × 4472 px, or 20 megapixels
Maximum file sizeUnder 20 MB
Aspect ratioBetween 100:1 and 1:100
Media per productUp to 250 images, videos and 3D models

Shopify's help and its developer docs give different maximums. If an app adds your images through Shopify's API, stay under 4472 px; 2048 px keeps you well inside both.

Which file formats does Shopify accept?

PNG is the best file type for most product images, followed by JPEG, according to Shopify. It also accepts PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC and WebP.

PNG keeps a transparent background, which suits cut-outs on a coloured theme. JPEG files are smaller for ordinary photos. Shopify's developer docs list fewer formats for images added through the API: PNG, GIF, JPEG, WebP and HEIC.

Does Shopify resize images for you?

Yes. When you add an image, Shopify creates different sizes automatically for the places your theme shows it, and themes can ask the Shopify CDN for a consistent size. Upload one large, clean file instead of shrinking it first: Shopify makes the smaller versions for phones and thumbnails.

Why should every product use the same aspect ratio?

Featured images only display at the same size when they share an aspect ratio, Shopify's help explains. Mixing square and portrait main images makes collection grids uneven. Pick one ratio for every product's first image, for example square, and keep it across the catalogue. Themes can also request consistent sizing from the Shopify CDN for images saved in other ratios.

How many images can a Shopify product have?

Up to 250 images, videos and 3D models combined per product. Shopify sets no minimum, so a product can go live with one photo. Its own photography guide suggests shooting several angles, and a clean main shot plus a lifestyle shot and a detail shot is a sensible floor for a store that looks consistent. See how many photos a listing needs for the marketplaces' numbers.

Does Shopify require a white background?

No. Shopify has no background rule for product images. Its photography guide suggests a pure white background so the product is the focus, and white main images also carry over to Amazon, which requires pure white, if you sell there too.

How do I get Shopify-ready images from one photo?

Generate the set in Product photos at 1:1 and the largest size your plan allows (1K on the free and Starter plans, 2K on Pro, 4K on Studio), then set the exact pixel size with the free Image resizer. Every image starts from the same product photo and the same ratio, so product pages and collection grids stay even.

Summary

For Shopify, use square images at 2048 x 2048 pixels, one aspect ratio for every main image, and files under 20 MB. Shopify takes up to 5000 x 5000 pixels in the admin (4472 x 4472 through its API) and up to 250 media items per product, with no minimum and no background rule.
